News after Sony Conference
Microsoft have reacted early to all the PS3 info revealed at Sony’s news conference and it is rather scathing to say the least. IGN got in touch with two people from Microsoft, Shane Kim and Chris Satchell, and got their thoughts on the PS3…
Chris Satchell
“From a gamer’s perspective, I’m pretty disappointed in Sony’s lack of innovation. I mean, they didn’t deliver anything terribly new, and at the cost of $600, $200 more than our system, it’s hard to get excited about it. The ‘new’ controller was even disappointing. It’s basically the same design. It doesn’t seem good for consumers, just good for Sony.”
Shane Kim
“Our top-priced premium system is $200 cheaper than theirs. And when you look at the whole package, our innovative online service, our price structure, the high quality of games, and the leadership we have provided, it’s really hard justifying the price difference. We’re in a real sweet spot with our pricing tier. We’re really confident about where we are pricing-wise.”
They didn’t stop there however, and continued on to question Sony’s committment to deliver six million Playstation 3’s by March next year, and also asked what about Sony’s online offerings.
PS3 will be launching with 2 different SKU’s / packages; the 20GB hard drive model for US$499, and the 60GB hard drive model for US$599. Well aside from the obvious difference in storage space, there are a number of other changes from one SKU to the next…
* The “basic” model does not have HDMI output.
* The “basic” model does not have MemoryStick, SD, or CompactFlash slots.
* The “basic” model does not have 802.11 b/g wireless.
So is the “premium” model worth the extra US$100? Is the unit worth $599. Well see how it pans out.
